Waste Not, Create a Lot

Children in first through sixth grades at Washington Elementary school in Phoenix, AZ are learning an important lesson about food waste in a fun and engaging way. Through writing poems and stories and coloring pictures of food, they are gaining a deeper understanding of the impact of food waste on our environment and society. This hands-on approach allows them to explore the topic in a creative and meaningful way, helping to foster a sense of responsibility and stewardship for our planet. By instilling these values at a young age, the children are not only developing important critical thinking skills, but also becoming conscious and caring members of their community.

Poem About Food Waste

Waste not, want not, so they say,

Let's not throw our food away,

Think of all the effort it took,

To grow that food and then to cook.

From farm to table, it's a journey long,

To waste it now would just be wrong,

A little meal planning goes a long way,

Reducing waste, day by day.

So let's be mindful, and not forget,

To use our leftovers, without regret,

And when we see others go without,

We'll know we did our part, no doubt.

The Careful Chef

There once was a chef with great taste,

Who hated to let food go to waste,

So he planned out each meal,

With a careful appeal,

To make sure not a scrap was misplaced!

The Bunny and the Fox

Once upon a time, in a lush green forest, there lived a family of rabbits. One day, the mother rabbit went to gather some food. She saw some delicious-looking fruits and bought as many as she could back to the forest.

The fruits were so tasty that they ate as much as they could. However, they had more than they could eat and some of the extras went bad.

Feeling guilty for wasting the fruits, the mother rabbit decided to teach her children an important lesson about not wasting food. She gathered all the scraps of food left over from their meals and made a big pot of vegetable soup.

The soup smelled delicious, and the rabbits eagerly sat down to eat. As they were eating, a hungry fox appeared out of nowhere and begged for some food. The mother rabbit kindly shared the soup with the fox.

The fox was so grateful for the soup that he asked the mother rabbit how she had managed to make such a delicious meal. She explained that she had used all the leftover scraps from their previous meals to make the soup.

The fox was impressed with the mother rabbit's resourcefulness and promised to never waste food again. He also promised to tell all the animals in the forest about the importance of not wasting food.

From that day on, the animals in the forest tried to use every bit of food they had, and they never wasted anything again.

The moral of the story is that wasting food not only harms the environment but also deprives others of the nourishment they need. We should always be mindful of the food we have and use it wisely.

Mother Earth Looks After All

Mother Earth, our home so vast,

A world of beauty unsurpassed,

Her mountains high, her oceans deep,

Her forests green, her valleys steep.

She gives us air to breathe each day,

And endless wonders to display,

From the smallest creature to the grandest tree,

Her precious gifts we need to see.

Let us respect her in every way,

And cherish her for another day,

Reduce our waste, and preserve her grace,

For future generations to embrace.

Mother Earth, we hear your call,

And vow to cherish you above all,

For in your embrace, we find our worth,

And in our hearts, we'll always respect Mother Earth.
