Food Benefits Online

Until recently, major retailers like Walmart and Amazon did not accept SNAP benefits, or funds from government food assistance, for online grocery orders. Now, the giants are reversing their stand on this.

There are good reasons why grocery retailers should accept Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards for online orders, because it can increase access to food for low-income families. EBT cards are used by individuals who qualify for government assistance programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). By accepting EBT cards for online orders, retailers can provide a convenient and safe way for these families to purchase groceries without having to physically go to the store. This is especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic, where vulnerable populations may not feel safe going out in public.

Another reason grocery retailers should accept EBT cards for online orders is that it can increase sales for the retailer. By making it easier for customers to purchase groceries, retailers can expand their customer base to include low-income families who may not have previously shopped at their store. Additionally, offering online ordering can increase convenience for all customers, which can lead to increased sales and customer loyalty.

Finally, accepting EBT cards for online orders can reduce stigma associated with using government assistance programs. Many low-income families may feel embarrassed or judged when using EBT cards in a physical store. By offering the option to use EBT cards for online orders, retailers can provide a discreet and judgment-free way for families to purchase groceries. This can help reduce the negative connotations associated with using government assistance programs and help promote greater acceptance and understanding.

According to food industry researcher Phil Lempert, expanding the availability of online ordering is the appropriate decision for both moral and commercial grounds.

He explained, "Because, you know, this is a very devoted customer."

According to Lempert, between 20% and 30% of the average grocery store's sales come from SNAP expenditures. And a great website that serves SNAP recipients can entice them to return, he claimed.
